Transient Altars 2001-2002
Continuing my work with body as temple, altar of offering, shroud- these pieces further understand the relationships of cloth / body / earth / spirit. Evocative of human sanctity, the cycle of time, a shroud of skin which houses the human soul, the sheet which covers us, wiping of tears, washing of feet.
In the sense that the antimension or portable altar is a consecrated altarcloth utilized by a missionary in the field, these pieces are sacred cloth in my field of experience and purpose.
The antimension is consecrated on Holy Thursday accompanied by the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist (Sedar meal) and the liturgical ceremony of foot washing, readying the beautified feet for spiritual journey grounded in earth-time.
The images and text in this triple series of Wombs, Mirrors and Transient Altars as in my others, are painted in ink on salvaged linens which have been reclaimed in dyebath and worked assemblages pieced of these fragments. My works are always elaborately hand stitched and intended as a quilt - the work of binding together and beautifying broken fragments, comforting, protective sheltering, community well being and liberation of prayer - prayer as the spoken word manifests truth through mantra and affirmation or by any sound, movement or task which is drawn out of the body.
