Mirrors 2001-2002

Through abstracted earth imagery recognizing the human elemental relationship, the wombs and mirrors breathe both out and in and are of the journey outwards, inwards and back out again. I made the concentric circles at a time of intense wordless-ness in which the movement and work of my hands was a great part of recovery of my self and as a mantra for undertanding the re-entering of the womb i was experiencing in my relationship with my daughter while she was pregnant. They are in keeping with the character of 11th-13th century Orthodox antimensium which were painted images (usually of Christ or of crosses on Calvary) on linen and bordered with text which are consectated cloth in place of the church's altar to serve for the communion/ mass for a traveling priest or missionary. what could be a more consecrated temple/altar than a mother's womb? life being of that sanctity and purpose it holds as a representation for offering we make in our lives with our bodies just by living and breathing in them, practicing a balance of gratitude and grace.

The text surrounding the mirrors is more of my spontaneous writing in wax on linen and is reflection on experiences in human mirroring. water/blood/sprit is also a connective theme between the wombs and mirrors. human figures, feet, hands, palm leaves, circles, byzantine crosses, text, use of materials and processes all are recurring messages in my visual vocabulary.
